Job Summary

The Respiratory Therapist performs various technical duties to administer respiratory therapy treatments to assigned patients. This position is part of the 1199SEIU Bargaining Unit at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. The position reports to the Clinical Manager, Respiratory Care, and operates within established organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent required
• Respiratory Therapist license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required
• NRP certification from the American Academy of Pediatrics required within 3 months of hire or transfer
• Six months to one year of experience required

Essential Job Functions

• Set up, apply, and administer therapy using respiratory equipment; control respiratory parameters; administer aerosol medications; monitor patient condition
• Perform pulmonary consultations, evaluate therapy effectiveness, and report significant changes
• Perform basic and advanced pulmonary function testing
• Conduct blood gas analysis and oversee training of personnel in blood gas laboratory
• Maintain records, charts, and prepare charges; assist in quality control programs
• Provide guidance and training to staff; participate as an instructor
• Educate patients on disease processes, medications, and home respiratory therapy equipment
• Provide emergency assistance such as CPR
• Maintain and calibrate diagnostic and therapeutic equipment
• Follow organizational policies, confidentiality, safety, infection control, and environmental standards
• Maintain professional growth through seminars, workshops, and journals
• Meet annual competency and retraining requirements
• Attend meetings and perform other duties as requested
