Shift: Night Shift

Advocate Children’s Hospital (ACH) - Oak Lawn is seeking talented, motivated respiratory therapists with a passion for caring for neonatal and pediatric patients. New team members receive comprehensive orientation and develop skills to work in units such as Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, Pediatric Cardiac ICU, Pediatric General Floors, and Pediatric Emergency Department. The pediatric respiratory care department focuses exclusively on neonatal and pediatric populations and offers opportunities for professional and educational growth.

Summary: Responsible for providing and coordinating comprehensive respiratory care. The Respiratory Therapist administers respiratory procedures and modalities according to standards, policies, and procedures. Using evidence-based practices, clinical judgment, and effective communication, the therapist strives to ensure patient safety and deliver excellent care across the continuum.

Major Responsibilities:

1. Assess patients using pulmonary diagnostics, chest radiographs, hemodynamic data, lab results, and blood gas analysis. Identify and address the specific needs of neonatal and pediatric patients.
2. Operate specialized ventilators in critical and non-critical care settings. Assist physicians with bedside procedures as applicable.
3. Administer medications and therapies as prescribed by physicians or protocols.
4. Maintain and troubleshoot respiratory equipment, ensuring proper functionality and safety.
5. Educate patients and families on therapy purpose, techniques, and disease management.
6. Collaborate with other departments to solve clinical problems and provide education.
7. Follow policies and procedures for various service areas, performing assigned tasks while maintaining standards.
8. Communicate effectively, providing clear patient handoffs and feedback.
9. Promote safety by adhering to safety protocols, reporting safety events, and assisting in corrective actions.
10. Teach and precept new staff, students, and team members.
11. Provide age-appropriate care, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

• Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) license issued by the state.
• Active Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from NBRC within 12 months OR active Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential if obtained before Jan 1, 2023.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Healthcare Providers from AHA.

Education Required:

• Graduate from an accredited respiratory care program with at least an associate degree.

Experience Required:

• No prior experience necessary.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
• Decision-making abilities for patient care and equipment use.
• Proficiency in computer use, email, and electronic medical records.
• Excellent communication and human relation skills.
• Ability to build rapport and work collaboratively.
• Effective time management and multitasking abilities.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Operate necessary equipment.
• Lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical transfers following safety protocols.
