Job summary

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn seeks a full-time Respiratory Therapist II to provide comprehensive respiratory care for adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients under physician direction. The role includes ventilator management, arterial blood gas analysis, and meticulous documentation of patient progress.

You will collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other staff, perform sputum induction, nitric oxide therapy, chest physiotherapy, and education for team members.

Qualifications

• New York State Respiratory Therapist Licensure is required.
• AAS in Respiratory Therapy or graduate of a 2-year AMA approved program is required.
• CRT certification is required.
• BLS certification must be obtained within 1 year of employment.
• NRP is required to work in NICU.

Responsibilities

Job Description

The Department of Respiratory Therapy at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Respiratory Therapist 2.

Job Summary

• Provide respiratory care for Adult, Pediatric, & Neonatal patients under the direction of a physician; (Neonatal and Pediatric Primary.
• Make rounds to determine if patient is receiving proper respiratory care.
• Conduct ventilator management.
• Draw and analyze blood for arterial blood gases.
• Record respiratory progress of patients who are being ventilated mechanically.
• Record the respiratory status of all patients.
• Assist physicians in ventilating patients who cannot sustain their own respiratory function during cardiorespiratory arrests.
• Provide sputum induction.
• Administer Nitric Oxide Therapy.
• Explain the use of respiratory care devices to patients and/or family members and assist in the use thereof.
• Make entries in patient’s progress record and hospital computer systems.
• Assist with education of other disciplines such as nursing and house staff.
• Clean and decontaminate equipment once removed from patient use.
• Provide chest physio-therapy and assist in pulmonary lavage/suctioning.
• Will provide coverage as needed to all age groups and patient care areas (dependent on experience and certifications).

• Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy or graduate of a 2-year AMA approved Respiratory Therapy program.
• Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT).

• NRP required to work in NICU.

Preferred Qualifications

• Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) with NPS, NRP, PALS and ACLS preferred.
