General Summary of Position
MedStar Health is seeking a Respiratory Care Practitioner to join our team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. The ideal candidate will be a certified respiratory therapist committed to providing exceptional patient care through strong knowledge in the field. Respiratory care is ordered by physicians according to established standards, practices, and protocols.
As a Respiratory Care Practitioner, you will possess working knowledge of human respiratory anatomy, physiology, and pathology related to respiratory care. You should be familiar with the operation of respiratory care equipment and its clinical application, able to assess hazardous conditions, and work effectively with patients of all ages—from neonatal to geriatrics. The ability to remain calm under stress and work well as part of a team is essential, along with strong communication skills.
Assess the physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and cultural dimensions of the patient, including educational needs, and document appropriately. Refer to competency validation documents for the populations served where applicable.
Perform all respiratory therapy treatments and services, including application, operation, monitoring, and management of equipment such as oxygen, mixed gases, humidity, ventilators (invasive and non-invasive), bronchial hygiene, lung expansion, spirometry testing, EKG machines, and blood gas analysis.
Employ principles of therapeutic communication, interviewing techniques, problem-solving, and crisis intervention in patient care.
Respond to emergencies, perform CPR, maintain airway, and provide oxygen and ventilation via various devices.
Facilitate workflow efficiency by monitoring interdepartmental systems, departmental policies, and procedures, and recommending improvements. Review electronic medical records and physician orders throughout shifts.
Associate degree from an AMA-accredited program in respiratory care (AAS Degree or higher).
CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist) - NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist or Pulmonary Function Technician from an accredited program is required.
BLS (Basic Life Support) certification required.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certification required within one year of hire.
NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) certification required within one year of hire.
PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification required within one year of hire.
Must be registry eligible; some experience is preferred.
Preferred qualifications include a Bachelor's degree in a related healthcare field and RRT (Registered Respiratory Therapist) certification from the NBRC.
This position offers a hiring range of $34.98 - $62.52.
