The smallest of Duke Health's four hospitals at 123 beds, it offers a comprehensive range of medical services, including 24-hour emergency care, cardiology, orthopedics, women's services, and surgical specialties.

Job Summary

Perform diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of clinical practice. Work performed in accordance with physician orders. Duties are performed across neonatal, pediatric, and adult patient populations.

Work Performed

• Administer oxygen and aerosolized medications via Intermittent Positive Pressure Breathing (IPPB), Intermittent Aerosol Therapy (IAT), and Metered Dose Inhaler (MDI).
• Administer incentive breathing devices.
• Perform nasotracheal and artificial airway suctioning.
• Perform CPR and bag-mask ventilation.
• Monitor pulse oximetry and arterial blood gases.
• Perform bedside pulmonary mechanics, diagnostic cardiopulmonary procedures, pulmonary function studies, EKGs, and cardiac monitoring.
• Transport patients within the hospital.
• Verify physician orders and ensure correct setup, safety, and functionality of all equipment and supplies.
• Adhere to all infection control standards.
• Recognize life-threatening situations and initiate appropriate responses.
• Understand pharmacological indications, dosages, and adverse reactions.
• Make patient care assessments according to protocols.
• Provide education to patients, families, and healthcare team members.
• Monitor therapy responses and document in patient records.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
• Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of respiratory equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must possess the knowledge to make appropriate clinical decisions, maintain certifications, and adhere to safety standards. Excellent customer service and communication skills are essential. Work involves contact with patients of all ages, healthcare professionals, and may require lifting over 30 pounds, as well as walking, climbing, and bending.

Minimum Qualifications
