Job description

The Respiratory Care Practitioner is responsible for assessing patients with respiratory disorders, conducting diagnostic tests, developing treatment plans, and administering respiratory therapy. This role operates medical devices, monitors patient responses, and provides emergency care when needed. This role works closely with healthcare teams to manage respiratory conditions, improve lung function, and enhance patient well-being. Working under some supervision, this role also educates patients about respiratory health and disease prevention.

Responsibilities include restoring pulmonary function and alleviating pain through prescribed respiratory therapy, conducting pulmonary function tests, and interpreting evaluation results. The practitioner administers inhalants, operates mechanical ventilators, and monitors physiological responses to therapy. They evaluate treatment effects, adjust plans accordingly, and contribute to discharge planning and home care instructions. Additional duties include performing bronchopulmonary drainage, assisting with breathing exercises, and ensuring continuity of care post-discharge.

Qualifications
  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent; Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
  • Experience: Minimum of 3 years in acute clinical care or completion of equivalent clinical rotations
  • Licensure & Certifications: Licensed by North Carolina Respiratory Care Board, certified as an RRT or with a provisional license or CRT at hire, BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications
