Job description

Residential Mentors will help design and implement a summer program during late May through June, 2023. The program will involve mentoring high school seniors during a three‑week residential summer program in the last three weeks of June 2023. There are five open positions; two positions are residential, three are for commuters.

Residential Mentors’ duties will begin in late April and early May 2023 when they will begin making personal contact with Freedom Scholars (hereafter Scholars). They will attend an evening information session for admitted Scholars and parents in late May. They will participate in a three‑day orientation to the CHP from June 7th through 9th and help lead an orientation for Scholars on Sunday, June 11.

Daily Shift Structure

• During the three weeks of the summer session, the Residential Mentors will fill three distinct shifts during the afternoon and evening: Team 1, Team 2 and a “floating” member of both teams.
• Team 1 Residential Mentors meet with Scholars for lunch at 12:10 each day, join two Academic Mentors in a debrief about that day’s morning seminars from 1:00–2:00, and lead Scholars on a short writing lesson that they reflect on during free study time. At 2:00 pm, they lead the afternoon activity (recreational sports, walks, workshops on college applications, workshops with visiting faculty, etc.) and supervise Scholars’ written reflections or reading until 6 pm when Scholars go in to dinner.
• Team 2 Residential Mentors begin their days at 6 pm, join Scholars at dinner, and accompany them through the evening schedule, which includes an evening activity from 7:00–9:00 pm. From 9:00 to 11:00, Scholars complete reading and/or writing; they turn in at lights‑out at 11:00. Team 2 stays in the dorms with the Scholars and ends their official work day at 12 midnight. The Project Director is in residence through each week’s night to assist Team 2 with any situations that arise from 11 pm–8 am.
• The “floating” Residential Mentor usually joins Team 1 at 2 pm and stays through the evening activity, providing additional support to both teams during the busiest part of each day.

Job Qualifications

• Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
• Skill in conflict resolution and building social and emotional learning as well as communication, especially with students from diverse backgrounds.
• Familiarity with the college application process and college readiness skills, particularly for first‑generation college‑goers, students from low‑income families, or members of historically marginalized groups.
• Strong interpersonal communication skills, as well as writing and editing skills.
• Proficiency in presenting and communicating complex ideas in written and oral forms.
• Demonstrated interest in civic or political issues.
• Experience organizing or leading others.
• Must be a rising college sophomore, junior, senior, or have graduated within the last two years with demonstrated excellence in college writing courses.
• Experience as a Residential Assistant and/or managing younger students in a residential setting and/or on field trips desired.
• Ability or interest in sports or expressive or visual arts (not required but appreciated).
• Knowledge of first aid and CPR (not required but appreciated).
• WSI or lifeguard certificate (not required but appreciated).
