The Residential Driver will be responsible for safely, efficiently, and courteously providing waste removal services to customers. The driver will collect solid waste or recyclables on curbside and/or backdoor routes and transport them to post-collection facilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive rear-load, split body, curbside, or automated-side load trucks along designated routes to collect waste and transport to facilities.
- Assist helpers with loading solid waste into the truck hopper as needed.
- Utilize helpers while backing up according to company policy.
- Ensure company employees and helpers adhere to policies, procedures, safety, and quality standards during routes.
- Operate mechanical packer to load and compact trash into the truck.
- Perform daily pre- and post-trip inspections; complete vehicle condition reports.
- Interact courteously with customers and the public, respond to questions, and notify supervisors of issues.
- Clean waste from the packer blade and truck body after landfill or transfer station runs.
- Maintain and submit DOT logs, route sheets, and vehicle reports as required.
- Skillfully maneuver trucks into and out of tight spaces using mirrors.
- Use maps and GPS to locate service addresses.
- Follow safe operating practices, including lockout/tagout procedures.
- Monitor operations for debris, ensuring safety during dumping.
- Comply with all DOT, OSHA, FMCSA, and EPA regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Valid CDL, Class A or B.
- At least 21 years old.
- Minimum one year of commercial driving experience or CDL school certificate.
- Meet safety-sensitive criteria per company standards.
- Demonstrate safe driving and equipment operation skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of truck components and basic maintenance.
- Ability to operate equipment and maneuver trucks safely.
- Recognize unacceptable waste materials.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to read, write, and understand maps and documents.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Adaptability and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Lift, push, pull objects up to 50 pounds using proper techniques.
- Coordinate multiple limbs while sitting or standing.
- Adhere to safety policies and procedures.
Physical and Mental Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, and smell.
- Visual requirements include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception.
- Lift/move up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Sitting may be required up to 75% of the time.
- Work in loud conditions.
Working Conditions
- Exposure to loud noise, weather extremes, mechanical parts, chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
- Work outdoors up to 100% of the time.
- Work routes away from the branch location daily.
- Occasional work in high places and in traffic.
- Work environment is usually loud.
