Job summary

Volunteers of America–Greater New York is seeking a Residential Counselor to support case management and treatment plan implementation for consumers. The role involves direct care, transportation, support, teaching, crisis intervention, and coordination with the treatment team.

Location options include Edison, Fanwood, Plainfield, and Perth Amboy, NJ; minimum qualifications include a relevant degree or nursing license, or equivalent work experience, plus a valid driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in mental health, health or related human services field, OR RN/LPN license, OR combination of college and related experience totaling four years.
• At least one year of related work or life experience if the four-year degree does not meet requirements.
• Valid driver’s license with clean driving record for 24 months.
• Additional licensing or credentials may apply per position.

Responsibilities

• On-site supervision and support for residents, including teaching, behavioral modeling, ADLs, and other tasks.
• Communicate observations to program manager, RN, and case management team.
• Organize and support recreational and social activities for residents.
• Provide transportation and assist with medication administration.
• Residential counseling and crisis intervention services (not counseling).
• Contribute to development of individual habilitation plans and assessments.
• Participate in individual service coordination activities.
• Document observations and services in progress notes.
• Cooperate with state staff during inspections or investigations.
