Job summary

Wentworth Institute of Technology seeks a Residential Community Director to oversee day-to-day operations of a residential area, supervise staff, and provide support and outreach to students. This live-in, 12-month role includes a furnished apartment and policy-driven responsibilities within Housing & Residential Education and the Division of Student Affairs.

The role includes managing a 280–475 student community, supervising 7–16 student leaders, and coordinating collateral assignments

Job Description

The Residential Community Director oversees the day-to-day operations of a residential area, supervises the staff assigned there, offers support and outreach to students within the residential area, and provides co-curricular opportunities for the residents. They ensure a safe, healthy living, and learning environment by enforcing institutional policies. In addition, they support all functions of Housing & Residential Education and the Division of Student Affairs.

This is a full-time 12-month position, live in position. Staff are provided with a furnished apartment. Partner and pet policy in place for all live-in staff.

Responsibilities:

• Manage the operation of a residential community ranging between 280 and 475 residential students.

• Supervise student leaders within the residential area of a team between 7 and 16.

• Provide individualized support to residential students.

• Participate in a collateral assignment that supports the department’s initiatives (such as Housing Operations, Student Conduct & Restorative Practices, CA Selection & Training, Community Development).

• Support the Division of Student Affairs, in ensuring ongoing recognition of student rights, responsibilities, and expectations by implementing campus policies and coordinating related procedures.

• Support and advance initiatives within Housing and Residential Education and the Division of Student Affairs through participation in projects and committees.

• Participate in 24-hour oncall duty rotations, as assigned.

Division of Student Affairs:

The Division of Student Affairs is committed to its vision of Every Student Thrives through the creation of student engagement opportunities and a holistic view of the student experience. Housing and Residential Education contributes to that vision through creating a robust educational and intentional residential experience for students. This includes learning communities and holistic program offerings. Housing and Residential Education staff also support students in their operational needs through coordinating move-in and move-out processes and collaborating with university partners on facility management.

Essential Functions:

Community Development – 20%

• Provide support to residential students through outreach, intentional programs and events with a strong emphasis on diversity and social justice components promoting inclusive communities.

• Work collaboratively with campus partners to foster a strong sense of belonging within Living Learning Communities and other residential education initiatives.

Operational Management – 20%

• Fulfill responsibilities relating to operations and building management of residential community.

• This may include, but is not limited to, helping to manage the opening, and closing of residential building(s), key management, health and safety inspections, damage billing and supervision of common areas within residential areas each trimester.

Student Conduct Administration and Student Support - 15%

• Collaborate with campus partners to ensure ongoing recognition of student rights, responsibilities, and expectations. Promote student compliance with policies and procedures, including those reflected in the student code of conduct, by facilitating student conduct meetings and coordinating conduct related sanctions.

• Conduct meetings with students to provide support for both academic and personal needs.

• Participate in 24-hour oncall duty rotations, as assigned.

Supervision of Residential Community Staff – 15%

• Provide guidance, mentorship, and support for job related responsibilities including resident interaction, roommate mediation, programming, etc.

Collateral Assignment - 20%

Academic Year:

The collateral assignment will be assigned every one to two years. Each staff member will participate in one collateral assignment per year. Examples include:

• Housing Operations :Assist with housing selection for continuing and first year students; coordinate and lead initiatives to support socialization/roommate matching; organize building tours for housing selection; support social media and marketing initiatives; support transitional operational projects.

• Student Conduct and Restorative Practices :Assist with the management of the University Probation Review Committee. Assisting with the recruitment, selection and training of student members and faculty/staff advisors; serve as a resource to the campus committee with opportunities to present to students, families, faculty and staff; assist with investigation and coordination of student conduct cases.

• Community Advisor Selection and Training :Assist with CA selection; provide support and leadership for CA training and development initiatives throughout the academic year through the lenses of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as well as student development theories / residential curriculum.

• Community Development :Provide guidance, planning, and implementation of Thematic Communities (LEAPs), assist with Community Development Model and Residential Curriculum through lenses of Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, as well as student development theories.

Summer Months:

Oversee and manage the coordination of new student orientation housing, support summer conferences/groups and/or Wentworth residential students that reside on campus during the summer.

Committees and Special Initiatives - 10%

• Participate on committees and in special initiatives, as necessary and appropriate to support the function of the Division of Student Affairs.

• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

• Strong interpersonal communication skills

• Demonstrated time management and/or project management skills

• Experience in supervising, student paraprofessionals, and/or student leaders

• Experience using Student Development Theories in an educational setting

• Demonstrated commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Education Requirements:

• A bachelor’s degree is required.

• Master’s Degree required in higher education, student affairs, or related field preferred.

Experience Required:

Minimum of one (1) year of professional experience, preferably in residential education. A master’s degree may be substituted for professional experience.

Position Details:

The job grade for this position is Grade3.

The expected wage range for this position is between $50,000 and $58,000 which reflects what was reasonably expected to pay for this role.
