Job summary

Richland County is seeking a Building Inspector to enforce residential building codes by inspecting homes and structures, issuing violations, and coordinating corrective actions. The position works with property owners, contractors, and the public to ensure safety and code compliance in all inspections.

The role requires knowledge of ICC standards, strong communication, and the ability to prepare records and reports. A valid driver’s license is required.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent vocational training in construction.
• ICC Residential Inspector certification within 18 months.
• Valid state driver’s license and related driving requirements.

Responsibilities

• Inspect existing one and two-family dwellings, mobile homes, and multi-family buildings for code compliance.
• Issue violation notices, enforce evacuations/closures, and coordinate repairs or demolitions as needed.
• Maintain records of inspections, complaints, investigations, and enforcement actions.
• Coordinate with owners, contractors, and neighbors to resolve code issues and explain requirements.
