Job summary

GFT is seeking an experienced Resident Engineer – Transit and Rail to join our Construction Services team in New Jersey. You will oversee all construction work and coordinate field coverage on assigned projects while communicating with the client and managing field personnel.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, a Professional Engineer license, and over 10 years of experience in rail RE activities. Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits are offered.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in rail RE activities and managing construction field teams.
  • Experience with NJ Transit, Port Authority of NY & NJ, NJDOT, or NJTA.
  • Familiarity with Project Management Procedures (PMP’s) and Project Management Guidelines (PMG’s) is a plus.

Job description

Resident Engineer – Transit and Rail

GFT is seeking an experienced Resident Engineer – Transit and Rail to join our Construction Services team in New Jersey.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee all construction work on assigned projects and coordinate field coverage as needed.
  • Keep the client informed of field activities and progress.
  • Supervise field personnel and review daily reports.
  • Guide the field team and communicate with office staff.
  • Review Site Specific Safety Work Plans (SSSWPs), Job Safety Analyses (JSAs), Construction Work Plans (CWPs), Quality Work Plans (QWPs), and other submittals.
  • Attend meetings in person and work directly with the client and project team members to resolve issues.
  • Manage daily observation of contractor operations for rail‑related transportation projects across New Jersey and the broader tri‑state region.
  • Serve as the field point of contact for the client and project stakeholders.
  • Supervise field staff, including inspectors, community liaison, and office engineer.
  • Review and verify construction schedules, including baseline and updates, in coordination with the client.
  • Perform inspections and observe field testing and commissioning.
  • Assist with preparation and negotiation of change orders and project reporting.
  • Review contractor payment vouchers, manning reports, payroll certifications, and labor documentation.
  • Lead project progress meetings and issue meeting minutes.
  • Oversee site safety, permit compliance, and coordination with adjacent projects.
  • Monitor contractor compliance with safety and health plans and approved quality plans.
  • Work with contractors to minimize public disruption.
  • Coordinate responses to RFIs, submittals, and shop drawings with design teams.
  • Prepare punch lists with the owner at project completion.
  • Address project challenges related to schedule and budget in collaboration with the owner, GFT, and contractors.
  • Handle project management responsibilities including staffing oversight, budget tracking, cost‑to‐complete analysis, and maintaining project records.
  • Review project documents to resolve construction and design issues and prepare correspondence and reports.
  • Use spreadsheets, databases, and scheduling tools to support project delivery.
  • Communicate with all key stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Professional Engineer license is preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in rail RE activities and managing construction field teams.
  • Experience with NJ Transit, Port Authority of NY & NJ, NJDOT, or NJTA.
  • Experience with catenary systems and rail facilities.
  • Must have the ability to drive.
  • OSHA 30‑hour safety course certification required.
  • Work schedule must be flexible to accommodate varying shifts (day, evening, weekend).
  • Familiarity with Project Management Procedures (PMP’s) and Project Management Guidelines (PMG’s) is a plus.
  • Experience with airport projects.
  • Certifications such as Rutgers TCC, NJSAT, ACI (preferred).
Compensation

The salary range for this role is $155,000 - $220,000 per year. Salary is dependent upon experience and geographic location.
