Resident Director – Position Summary

The Resident Director (RD) resides within a Cairn residence facility and is responsible for the instruction, discipleship and mentoring of students. The RD holds the faculty rank of Instructor, teaches INT010 and oversees related co-curricular activities. The RD is responsible for the overall management of the resident facility and students on a given site. Supervised by the Director of Community Life, the Resident Director oversees a team of student leaders who work to create a distinct community of Biblical university resident students. The Resident Life team of each site delivers programmed activities, guidance, discipleship, discipline, crisis management, holistic care, and general supervision to the residents of that site. The position is an eleven-month, full-time position which allows for a flexible schedule during designated weeks of the summer.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide 24 hours per day / 7 days per week coverage in the assigned residence hall.
  • Remain on-call through cell phone communication to respond to student and facility needs.
  • Provide supervision to respective site and the activities that are conducted within.
  • Remain prepared to provide critical incident response on campus.
  • Participate in the interview and selection process for members of the Resident Life team.
  • Participate in and lead training sessions of Resident Life training.
  • Lead a Resident Life Team of student staff that fosters relationships with residents.
  • Conduct weekly team meetings to schedule events and to implement preventative care.
  • Conduct regular meetings with Resident Assistants and Lead Resident Assistants.
  • Provide advisement to Residence Hall Association to provide unique site events.
  • Supervise and host the arrival of new students; respond to questions/issues that arise.
  • Assist in the senior exit interview process, as requested.
  • Record and review database of student violations; follow-up as needed.
  • Confront students on issues of community standards; follow-up as needed.
  • Participate in the University-wide events through active involvement or leadership.
  • Attend regular meetings with the Director of Community Life and, when requested, the Dean of Students.
  • Work out of the Student Life office (proper) on an assigned rotating schedule.
  • Act as the physical plant coordinator for assigned residential site including oversight of services, routine walk throughs, maintenance, and strategic planning for future developments.
  • Communicate unmet facility management needs to the Director of Community Life.
  • Collaborate with Campus Services during the spring and summer months to coordinate the completion of the facility’s summer work list.
  • Participate in regular departmental meetings.
  • Participate in University meetings as requested.
Skills and Abilities
  • People-oriented, creative, sincere, and depth of Christian faith commitment.
  • Experience in Student Development and/or Higher Education and working with student populations. Understanding of developmental concerns of university-age populations. Ability to encourage personal growth in others. Ability to initiate relationships and develop rapport with undergraduate students and staff/faculty.
  • Possess general computer skills including word processing, e-mail, social media and internet functions.
  • Possess effective interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and thinking of prospective students and parents.

Required Education and Experience
  • A Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Experience in Resident Life or other areas of Student Development preferred.
