Job summary

Promise House Hiawatha is hiring a Universal Worker (Resident Care Assistant) to provide compassionate, hands-on support with residents' daily care needs. This role promotes comfort, dignity, safety, and quality of life while assisting the nursing team in a positive care environment.

The ideal candidate is dependable, caring, and committed to personalized assistance. Benefits include health/dental/vision, 401(k) match, PTO, and EAP, with schedules spanning 6am–2pm and 2pm–10pm shifts.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required or preferred by facility policy.
• Must be at least 16 years old, per employment/training requirements.
• Ability to read, write, and follow written/verbal instructions in English.
• Genuine interest in caring for older adults and supporting daily needs.
• Willingness to complete required annual in-service training and ongoing education.

Responsibilities

• Assist residents with daily personal care including bathing, dressing, grooming and skin care.
• Help residents prepare for meals and assist with in-room dining as needed.
• Serve meals and snacks, assist with eating and ensure hydration.
• Monitor and document food and fluid intake as directed.
• Report changes in appetite and coordinate meal substitutions when necessary.
• Assist with admissions, discharges and transfers.
• Take vital signs and provide basic care under nursing staff guidance.
• Observe and report changes in residents' condition to the nurse or supervisor.
• Follow each resident’s care plan and respect routines and needs.
• Document care provided and complete required records.
• Support residents’ physical, social, and emotional well-being with individualized care.
• Follow facility policies, infection prevention, safety procedures and care standards.
• Participate in in-service training and ongoing skills development.
• Collaborate with nursing staff to maintain a safe, supportive environment.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
