The City of Oskaloosa, IA seeks a Reserve Firefighter to support its Fire Department in protecting life and property within the city and surrounding area.

POSITION: Reserve Firefighter
DEPARTMENT: Fire
CIVIL SERVICE: No | FLSA EXEMPT: No | UNION: No
REPORTS TO: Fire Chief/Fire Captain
PAY CLASSIFICATION: Reserve Fire Employee | PAY GRADE: N/A

POSITION SUMMARY

The Reserve Firefighter supplements full-time staff in protecting life and property throughout the City of Oskaloosa and surrounding response area. Duties include fire suppression, rescue and emergency response, fire prevention, equipment and station maintenance, and training. May perform duties of other Fire Department employees when qualified and assigned.

SUPERVISES: May occasionally supervise other reserve staff.

EQUIPMENT USED: Fire apparatus and vehicles, saws, generators, extrication and rescue equipment, hand tools, watercraft, and other firefighting equipment.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES
  • Responds to fires, motor vehicle accidents, rescues, medical emergencies, and other emergency calls.
  • Performs fire suppression, extrication, salvage, rescue, and related emergency operations.
  • Assists EMS with patient care as needed.
  • Inspects, cleans, maintains, and performs minor repairs on apparatus and equipment.
  • Maintains the fire station, equipment, and grounds.
  • Participates in required training and instruction.
  • Maintains knowledge of local streets, buildings, hydrants, hazards, and response areas.
  • Participates in fire prevention, inspections, and public education activities.
  • May respond to hazardous materials, confined space, high-angle, water, trench, collapse, and other specialized rescues when trained.
  • Assists victims and families during emergency situations.
  • Performs duties safely and in accordance with City policies, the Employee Handbook, and Fire Department Rules and Regulations.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS

High school diploma or GED and at least 18 years of age. Must have the ability to:

  • Obtain Firefighter I, Firefighter II, and Hazardous Materials Operations certifications.
  • Learn firefighting, rescue, emergency response, and department procedures.
  • Operate emergency communications, firefighting vehicles, equipment, and computer applications.
  • Read and follow oral and written instructions and communicate effectively.
  • Work effectively as part of a team under stressful and time-sensitive conditions.
  • Maintain the physical fitness necessary for firefighting and rescue activities.
REQUIRED SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
  • Successfully complete post-offer physical examination and drug screening.
WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and may involve extreme heat, cold, hazardous environments, and emergency situations. Reserve Firefighters must attend two monthly training exercises, generally the first and third Thursdays from 6:00–9:00 p.m., and may be called to duty at any time. When qualified, employees may fill portions of 24-hour shifts when additional staffing is needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess, with or without reasonable accommodation, sufficient speech, hearing, vision, manual dexterity, mobility, strength, and physical reflexes to safely perform firefighting, rescue, and emergency response duties. Must maintain required physical fitness and regular, dependable attendance.
