JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Bordenstein Laboratory at Penn State University's Departments of Biology and Entomology and the One Health Microbiome Center seeks two Research Technologists - Life Sciences (Advanced Professional) to design, implement, support, analyze, and report on research in host-microbe symbioses and microbiome sciences, focusing on insect endosymbionts, bacteriophages, and animal-associated microbiomes. The role involves extensive use of Drosophila transgenic expression, genetic editing, fitness assays, dissections, microscopy, and team management to study how Wolbachia bacteria influence reproduction in Drosophila melanogaster.

The primary responsibilities include:

• Designing experiments independently, analyzing data, managing time, and reporting results
• Developing and following scientific protocols, evaluating specimens, and applying biostatistics
• Coauthoring scientific papers, grants, presentations, and reports
• Innovating research methods and technical approaches for problem-solving
• Collecting and analyzing data, creating visualizations
• Managing trainees in molecular biology, biosafety, lab policies, and equipment maintenance
• Performing experimental tasks such as insect handling, dissections, staining, microscopy, microinjections, and genotyping using PCR and qPCR
• Maintaining laboratory insect colonies of hundreds to thousands of insects daily
• Handling troubleshooting, lab scheduling, and assisting with ongoing experiments
• Maintaining a safe, welcoming, and professional lab environment

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree or higher plus at least three years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Strong problem-solving, interpersonal, organizational, communication, and documentation skills
• Ability to work collaboratively and demonstrate leadership in diverse team environments
