Job summary

Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is seeking a laboratory researcher in the Sabnis Lab to support translational pediatric cancer research.

The role involves bench work, data presentation, and collaboration with multi-disciplinary teams to identify new treatments for pediatric sarcomas. The candidate will spend ~80% of time on bench research (tissue culture, mouse care, reagent prep, data analysis) and ~20% on administrative tasks (ordering and database management).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Science (Required).
  • 3 years' lab/bench or relevant experience preferred; advanced degree acceptable.
  • Strong command of English and ability to communicate effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Follow pre-defined protocols and perform standard experiments with troubleshooting.
  • Set up, operate and maintain standard lab equipment.
  • Conduct molecular biology, cellular biology, immunology and/or animal experiments (ELISA, Western blot, PCR, flow cytometry).
  • Act as liaison between collaborative groups and document results and data.
  • Maintain facility records, schedule, and perform administrative tasks as needed.
  • Manage reagent/inventory and ensure proper lab hygiene and safety.

Job Description: The Sabnis lab is a translational cancer research group. We use chemical and genetic tools and model systems ranging from cancer cell lines to preclinical animal models to patient samples, with the goal of identifying and validating new treatments and biomarkers for children and young adults with sarcomas. The ideal candidate for this position has strong scientific laboratory training, is comfortable working independently and collaboratively to design and troubleshoot experiments, and is looking for a longer-term growth position within our group. The position will require 40 hours per week and will report to Amit Sabnis, Associate Professor in Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. 20% of your time will be spent handling administrative tasks (reagent ordering, lab database management, managing the training and consistent practice of other laboratory members) and 80% on bench research (reagent preparation, tissue culture, treatment and care of mice, figure preparation, data presentation, and grant and manuscript writing).

Essential Job Functions:
  • Follows pre-defined protocols, policies, procedure, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices and conducts standard and repetitive experiments and completes basic trouble-shooting techniques.
  • Sets-up, operates and maintains standard lab equipment.
  • Using an entry level of skill, completes the following activities: Molecular Biology, Cellular Biology, Immunology and/or Animal activities. Examples of assays include ELISA, Western blot, viral plaque assay, flow cytometry, and PCR.
  • Acts as liaison between collaborative groups.
  • Records test results and may maintain databases. Develops, performs and assists investigators in their experiments.
  • Maintains records of facility use, assists in scheduling, purchasing, and other administrative activities (i.e., data entry, data presentation, data analysis, word processing, etc).
  • Maintains inventory of reagents, mice, and supplies and performs routine cleaning and maintenance of instrumentation.
  • Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
  • Other job functions as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; or appropriate combination of education and experience and 3 years' lab/bench or other relevant experience required; or Successful completion of a full course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a master's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; or appropriate combination of education and experience and 1 year lab/bench or other relevant experience.
  • Working knowledge of computers, ability to troubleshoot, work independently, and function as a team member is essential. Therefore, experience in regular interaction with outside groups is highly desirable.
  • Excellent command of the English language and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to establish priorities, react promptly to a large variety of requests, and the ability to keep the workplace clean and organized.

$43,680.00-$67,704.00 Salary
