The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Technologist. Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, the Research Technologist is responsible for performing routine analyses and tests on animal or human fluids and/or tissue to study the causes and pathology of Multiple Sclerosis. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and troubleshoot situations needing special attention.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  1. Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform experiments associated with immunology, neuroscience, and serology. These may require basic blood separation, labeling and assay methods such as ELISA, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, MACS bead isolations and other associated specialized laboratory methods including tissue culture and molecular biology techniques.
  2. May also perform separation, identification and purification methods of cell populations.
  3. Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and/or utilize laminar flow hood.
  4. May also utilize sophisticated instrumentation such as flow cytometer; thermocycler; epifluorescent microscope; confocal microscope; spectrophotometer.
  5. Will utilize rodent in vivo models in experiments.
  6. Following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines.
  7. Sacrifices and dissects animal tissues as required.
  8. Prepares tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques.
  9. Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g., calibrating, alignment. Prepares solutions, reagents, and stains following standard laboratory formulas and procedures.
  10. Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, and counts orders upon receipt.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY (Commensurate w/exp.)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training, and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

SOM hires must be fully vaccinated with an FDA COVID-19 vaccination and provide proof of vaccination status. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B, and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
