Research Technologist

We are seeking a Research Technologist who will work with a team that includes other technicians, undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. The successful candidate will be responsible for contributing to an independent research project, contributing to other projects by assisting with experiments and general maintenance of the laboratory, equipment and supplies.

Specific Duties And Responsibilities

  • Assist in research to elucidate the molecular mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis.
  • Operate and maintain basic laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges, pH meter, analytical balance, spectrophotometer, light microscope, and/or biosafety cabinets; perform standard procedures for standard laboratory assays; perform aseptic technique effectively.
  • Performs standard genetic, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, and biochemical techniques such as PCR, cloning, bacterial and cell culture, growth assays, western analysis, as well as performs quantitative analyses and other functional assays directly related to the research project.
  • Collect and record data according to established protocols and maintain accurate up-to-date records.
  • The employee will be expected to acquire a level of knowledge to properly execute experiments and analyze results.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment; prepare solutions, reagents, and media following defined laboratory protocols; order materials and supplies, catalog, and store by established procedures.
  • Operate lab computers for data entry and maintain complete and up-to-date strain, reagent, and chemical lists.
  • Exchange data and other information in an appropriate manner that requires good oral and written communication skills.
  • Promote a collaborative, cooperative work environment.
  • Comply with biohazard safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace and complete annual university biohazard safety training, as appropriate.
  • Identify and report problems in completing routine lab procedures.


Note - The work environment may include areas of unpleasant cold and biohazardous conditions such as the risk of fumes or airborne particles, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals and/or biosafety level 2 biological agents and/or reagents which mandate considerations and attention to following approved, biosafety protocols and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond HS Diploma/Graduation Equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with basic lab methods, such as making chemical solutions, aseptic technique, and molecular techniques.
  • Experience with bacterial culture and genetics
  • Experience with lipid biochemistry
  • Experience with fluorescence microscopy.

Starting Salary Range: $15.70 - $26.25 HRLY ($37,000 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University’s salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency

Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing.
