The University of Utah's Scott Hale Lab in Pathology seeks a Research Technician II to perform standard immunology procedures in a laboratory setting. You will record observations, report results, and assist with cleaning and maintaining equipment in a controlled environment.

The role requires performing tests and experiments, sometimes independently or with a team, and supporting purchase and stocking of materials. Training is provided; supervision is minimal.

Qualifications

Job Summary

The Scott Hale Lab in the Department of Pathology seeks aresearch technician to perform technical procedures in animmunology research laboratory under minimal supervision byapplying standard scientific techniques and analyticalprinciples.

The employee will record observations and measurements, and reportresults. May be responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, andmaintaining cleanrooms and equipment. May assist with receipt andinspection of raw materials, and ordering and stocking of materialsand equipment.

Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  1. Confers with senior laboratory personnel regarding theprocedures and techniques to be followed in conductingresearch.
  2. Performs laboratory tests and conducts experiments andprocedures either independently or in a team setting with otherresearchers in the laboratory.
  3. Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and preparesreports summarizing results.
  4. Must be willing to work with research mice, will perform dutiesto manage research mouse colony, and collect animal tissues andspecimens for laboratory analysis.
  5. Performs laboratory duties to clean and maintain equipment andensures a safe work environment by monitoring and practicing safelaboratory procedures.
  6. Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies andmaterials

Nearly Continuously: Laboratory environment.

Often: Exposure to animals. Infectious disease, oils (there isair or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards(includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximityto moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current,working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure tochemicals).

Physical Requirements and Level of Frequency that may berequired

Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.

Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing and pipetting),walking, standing, sitting.

Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

Minimum Qualifications

EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher educationcan be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience(Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related workexperience).

Research Technician, II:

Preferences
  • The candidate should be able to learn and apply laboratorytechniques and skills, and will perform experiments under the supervision and training of senior lab personnel.
  • Experience and/or understanding of flow cytometry, RNA and DNAisolation/preparation, sequencing, PCR, and other cellular andmolecular biology techniques is strongly preferred.
  • The candidate should be able to generate accurate and detailedresearch reports and laboratory records. Strong computer skills andthe ability to learn and operate laboratory equipment is importantto success in this position.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability to work withothers, and a strong work ethic/enthusiasm for conducting researchis highly preferred.
