The School of Plant Sciences at the University of Arizona is looking for a Research Technician II to be part of the Hu Research Team. The individual in this position will provide professional research assistance for an applied research program focused on etiology and integrated disease management of economically important crop diseases in Arizona.

This position offers the opportunity to be a part of a dynamic research team performing disease diagnosis and pathogen detection, developing sustainable control strategies for soilborne and foliar diseases on grapevines, fruit nut trees and other plants.

This is an Extended Temporary Employment (ETE) position.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Processing plant specimens for pathogen isolation and identification using morphological and molecular methods.
  • Conduct lab assays to evaluate efficacy of existing and new treatments to improve disease control on agriculture crops.
  • Conduct greenhouse, growth chamber studies, and field trial to evaluate the efficacy of new treatments and understand pathogen and disease reactions to environmental conditions.
  • Performing DNA and RNA isolation, PCR, and qPCR assays as well as pathogen detection and quantification assay.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree: Plant Pathology, Biology Microbiology or related field or related experience such as experience in aseptic technique, manipulating cultures, research greenhouse operations, and/or basic molecular biology procedures.
  • Demonstrated experience providing coordination/lead work for others in a research setting; provide general guidance and coordinate schedules of student employees and unpaid volunteers.
  • Demonstrated experience in testing, writing new scientific protocols, as well as operating and maintaining technical field and laboratory equipment such as sprayers, autoclave, thermocycler, centrifuge, spectrophotometers, gel and documentation system.
