Job description

Dr. Alex Bishop Lab

The Bishop lab in the Center for Childhood Cancer Research studies cancer development, prevention and therapeutic targeting using genomics, molecular biology, cell biology and animal model techniques. The purpose of this position is to support the day-to-day operations of the Bishop Lab as well as performing bench-based research. They are responsible for assisting the PI and Bishop lab members in the implementation and performance of all aspects of their research. They are responsible for resource and protocol management of the research unit.

This position will interact closely with the PI and assist in regulatory compliance of animal and laboratory studies. This position works with investigators and lab staff to implement and maintain best research practices, manage funding, foster efficient and productive relationships with other groups, and interface with multiple NCH/RI departments/cores to coordinate efficient research efforts. Responsibilities
  • Manages human, animal and physical resources associated with the research unit.
  • Responsible for ensuring that the unit is IRB, IBC and IACUC compliant; maintains, updates, and implements guidelines and procedures; (directs and conducts training of all staff). Oversees regulatory processes for research staff.
  • Responsible for maintaining overall laboratory organization and best practices.
  • Assure all employee's actions and procedures adhere to the policies, procedures and regulations of the Research Institute.
  • Responsible for carrying out portions of research studies in close collaboration with the PI.
  • Responsible for management of animal (mouse) colony in close collaboration with the PI.
  • Thorough knowledge of most basic molecular biology techniques including but not limited to:
  • DNA/RNA/protein purification from tissues and cells.
  • PCR genotyping; quantitative PCR; western immunoblotting; immunohistochemistry; cell culture and transfection.
  • Genomic analysis and confocal microscopy capabilities are desirable.
  • Specific experience in cancer biology is preferred.


Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in relevant field of science required with at least 2 years of bench experience.
  • Well-developed organizational skills with a demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Goal-oriented; self-directive.
  • Initiation, motivation, creativity.
  • Strong writing, training and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of word processing and data management software.
