Job summary

Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM seeks a Research Technician to support corrective and preventative maintenance of programmatic equipment. You will assist in assembly/disassembly, document tasks, and troubleshoot systems under guidance from senior staff.

Higher level candidates may take on electrical and mechanical repairs, vendor liaison for parts, and detailed work order documentation. A Q clearance is required for this role.

  • Ability to follow safeguards and security procedures in accordance with Laboratory policy.
  • Has experience with working to a set of defined requirements and regulations (e.g. chemical management and pressure safety policies).
  • Ability to work in a highly regulated, safety, Integrated Work Document (IWD) and checklist environments.
  • Demonstrated experience executing job responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient computer skills with common applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to obtain a Q-clearance which typically requires US citizenship.

Job description

What You Will Do

This position is open for external candidates only to apply. The Sigma Operations Group (Sigma-OPS) is seeking an energetic, customer-focused individual to join our Programmatic Maintenance team. The Research Technician will provide support to all aspects of the Programmatic Maintenance team including, but not limited to, corrective, preventative, and predictive maintenance activities on programmatically owned equipment.

Sigma Division focuses on materials science and engineering, emphasizing metallurgical processes and research in support of the experimental testing program at Los Alamos. Sigma-OPS is a customer-based group that supports the programmatic operational needs of Sigma Division.

This position will be filled at either the Research Technician 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Research Technician 3 $66,100 - $103,600

As a Research Technician 3, you will be assisting in corrective and preventative maintenance, responsible for assembly and disassembly of related equipment, and providing feedback to the programmatic maintenance planner to document work tasks. You will work from maintenance manuals and/or diagrams to troubleshoot and maintain various types of programmatic systems with direction from higher level technicians and technologists.

Research Technician 4 $72,800 - $115,400

In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, you will be responsible for electrical and mechanical equipment repairs and providing detailed operations to the programmatic maintenance planner to document work order tasks and completion. You will also be responsible for navigating machine manuals to find replacement parts and contacting vendors to get part/consumable quotes and troubleshooting instructions.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in supporting maintenance programs such as; metrology, waste management, and safety.
Research Technician 3 Education/Experience

Position requires an Associate's Degree and 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Research Technician 4 Education/Experience

Position requires an Associate's Degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge/experience performing corrective, predictive, and preventative maintenance.
  • Experience working with data entry in regards to basic maintenance input.
  • Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).
  • Moderate knowledge of tools and supporting equipment.
  • Active DOE Q clearance.
  • Experience working to a schedule and preventative maintenance plans.
  • Experience with CNC Machine Maintenance.

The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment

Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Clearance: Q

Position will be cleared to this level. Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test

The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
