Summary of Job Duties: This position provides support for a basic science research laboratory (Huang Lab) in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. The lab studies the immune responses in the lung during infection and other inflammatory conditions. Applicant will be responsible for performing general and more specific laboratory tasks, including in vitro and in vivo experiments (tissue culture, PCR, animal necropsy, etc) as directed by the supervisor and general laboratory maintenance (ordering supplies, laboratory cleaning, inventory organization, stocking solutions, sterilization of reagents and supplies). The Research Technician will also organize and maintain an animal colony used for research. This position requires 100% effort towards research projects for at least 18 months commitment. This position is ideal for students planning to pursue graduate or medical school, providing valuable research experience and preparation for their future careers.
Qualifications:
High School diploma/ GED plus two (2) years of experience in performing tests in a research laboratory required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Basic knowledge of the equipment used in a research laboratory.
Be willing to work with, handle, and perform laboratory mice experiments.
Be capable of formulating and making stocks of media and other chemical reagents.
Be able to keep organized laboratory records and notes.
Be proficient in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel.
Have good communication skills.
Should not have prior allergies to laboratory mice and be able to move and clean pieces of laboratory equipment.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree with college-level coursework in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, and/or cell biology.
2 to 3 years of laboratory experience.
Prior experience working with laboratory mice.
Prior experience in sterile culturing techniques.
Additional Information:
Responsibilities:
Harvest and process tissues from laboratory mice.
Isolate immune cells and prepare samples for flow cytometry, microscopy, etc.
Process, analyze, and present data as directed by the Principal Investigator (PI).
Train new laboratory personnel upon request.
Place orders, obtain quotes, fill and submit ordering forms, track order status, and receive orders.
Maintain records of laboratory inventories (reagents and supplies) and animal colonies.
Maintain laboratory equipment and common spaces (incubators, water bath, pH meter, hoods, and common lab benches.
Make stock solutions and autoclave.
Perform other duties as assigned.
