Job summary

University of Alabama at Birmingham invites applications for a Research Software Engineer-ENT to support enterprise research computing systems. The role designs, develops, tests, and deploys applications that enable campus researchers to access HPC resources, on-prem cloud, containers, and storage platforms.

You will collaborate with researchers, engineers, and operations staff, document solutions, and mentor others while maintaining security standards and HIPAA/FERPA awareness.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in CS or engineering plus 2 years of related experience required.
• Broad knowledge of deploying and managing research computing cyberinfrastructure.
• Experience with agile (CI/CD) methodologies.
• Experience with open-source tooling and methodologies.
• Ability to work independently with some oversight to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and deploy applications to support access to campus HPC, on-prem cloud, container and storage platforms.
• Establish best practices (version control, CI/CD, software design) and ensure long-term maintainability.
• Provide application support to researchers and define requirements with researchers.
• Collaborate with UAB engineers and collaborating institutions to integrate tools.
• Transfer knowledge through documentation, mentorship, and communications with researchers and staff.
