Job Description And Duties

The Research Scientist Staff position supports the California Department of Public Health by monitoring, analyzing, and reporting public health hazard data to strengthen emergency preparedness and response. The position leads epidemiologic research, manages real-time and predictive data systems, and conducts complex statistical analyses to identify emerging public health threats. It develops and maintains data architecture, improves surveillance systems, and provides evidence-based recommendations for critical communications and intelligence products. The Research Scientist Staff position trains staff, collaborates with internal and external partners, and presents research findings to support statewide emergency planning and response. The role requires ongoing review of scientific literature, participation in meetings, exercises, and conferences, and representation of CPR in emergency preparedness discussions. The incumbent must maintain working knowledge of emergency management systems—including SEMS, NIMS,ICS, MHCC—and may work extended or irregular hours during emergency activations.
