Base pay range: $120,000.00/yr - $180,000.00/yr

About Basis

Basis is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two goals:

  1. Understand and build intelligence: Establishing the principles of reasoning, learning, decision-making, understanding, and explanation; and constructing software that implements these principles.
  2. Advance society’s ability to solve intractable problems: Expanding and accelerating the scale, complexity, and breadth of solvable problems.

We aim to build a new technological foundation inspired by human reasoning and foster a collaborative organization that prioritizes human values.

About The Role

Research scientists lead efforts to understand the conceptual, mathematical, and computational principles of intelligence. We seek technically excellent individuals who value foundational probing and are open to exploring radical ideas. Collaboration is key, both internally and with external partners.

Requirements
  • Proven ability to conduct high-quality scientific research (publications, reports, software projects).

Preferred qualifications include a PhD or equivalent in areas such as statistics, programming, machine learning, neuroscience, cognitive science, physics, or mathematics. Passion for solving real-world problems and societal impact is a plus.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and explore computational theories of intelligence.
  • Collaborate with domain experts to solve scientific and societal problems.
  • Extract insights into general theories.
  • Develop and maintain open-source software.
  • Publish and present research findings (optional).
  • Contribute to Basis’s culture and strategic direction.
Role Details
  • Type: Full-time
  • Location: In-person in New York City or Cambridge, MA; flexible hours with some in-person events.
  • Salary: Competitive, with bonuses.
