Job description

John Snow Labs US-Based Healthcare Data Scientist
  • Contract

John Snow Labs is an award-winning AI and NLP company, accelerating progress in data science by providing state-of-the-art software, data, and models. Founded in 2015, it helps healthcare and life science companies build, deploy, and operate AI products and services. John Snow Labs has received multiple awards, including the 2018 AI Solution Provider of the Year, 2019 AI Platform of the Year, 2019 International Data Science Foundation Technology award, and the 2020 AI Excellence Award.

The company developed Spark NLP, the world's most widely used NLP library in the enterprise, and is a leading provider of clinical NLP software, powering major healthcare & pharma companies. The team comprises specialists, with 33% holding a Ph.D. or M.D., and 75% holding at least a Master’s degree in data science, medicine, software engineering, pharmacy, DevOps, and SecOps.

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Scientist to contribute to transformative healthcare initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in developing and optimizing machine learning models within healthcare, training and fine-tuning models, building production-ready inference pipelines, and conducting exploratory data analysis and data enrichment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Train, fine-tune, and enhance LLM & NLP models using open-source Python libraries. Experience with LLMs, Generative AI, and deep learning is a plus.
  • Build data science and engineering pipelines for analyzing clinical data, extracting information from medical text or images, and integrating data from multiple sources.
  • Collaborate on customer projects, creating machine learning, deep learning, large language models, and time series forecasting pipelines tailored to business needs.
  • Validate models for bias, overfitting, and concept drift to ensure reliability.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to customers, demonstrating strong oral and written skills.

Mandatory Skills:

  • Proven experience delivering real-world projects aligned with key responsibilities.
  • Hands-on experience with OMOP, FHIR, clinical terminologies, and understanding of the patient journey.
  • Background in healthcare-related fields such as medicine, pharma, bioinformatics, or biostatistics is highly beneficial.
  • A PhD is preferred but not required with exceptional experience.
  • Experience with John Snow Labs’ technology stack, such as Spark NLP or medical language models, is a plus.

What We Offer:

  • Work on cutting-edge healthcare and life sciences problems that impact patient outcomes.
  • Long-term freelancing contracts of at least 30 hours per week, seeking individuals, not agencies.
  • Opportunity to grow skills with a team of experts in a supportive environment.

To apply, include 'John Snow Labs' in your cover letter and explain why you're the best fit. This is more than a contract — it's a chance to make a real difference.

Our Commitment to You:

We value diversity as a catalyst of innovation and are committed to empowering talented individuals from all backgrounds.

As a fully virtual company collaborating across 28 countries, we welcome candidates from Asia or Europe. This is a contract role requiring 30-40 hours per week.
