Our long-term goals are: to understand the complex interactions between HBV and its host that drive viral persistence and to use these insights to identify new strategies toward a functional cure for chronic hepatitis B, which remains a major global health challenge and an important cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality; to establish a multi-organ organoid and stem cell-derived platform that contributes to our understanding of viral pathogenesis and host immune responses; to develop GMP-grade, hypoimmunogenic bioartificial liver for transplantation; to determine how the different liver cells respond to injury and their impacts on regeneration and fibrosis; and to uncover fundamental mechanisms of disease and identifying new opportunities for therapeutic intervention.
