Summary

The Research Scientist I – Remote Sensing SAR Specialist position provides support for MTRI programs focused on remote sensing and geospatial analysis to address governmental and societal needs through sponsored research. Knowledge of remote sensing theory and applications, especially Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), is required. The candidate will develop proposals, conduct fieldwork, and support research in areas like fire mapping, aquatic sensing, invasive species, wetlands, and data visualization. This is an in-person position based at MTRI in Ann Arbor, MI.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in remote sensing research projects applying SAR and geospatial analysis.
  • Collaborate on multidisciplinary projects addressing societal needs.
  • Troubleshoot data processing issues to ensure data validity.
  • Evaluate and interpret data, sharing concerns and solutions.
  • Contribute to publications and technical reports, possibly leading some efforts.
  • Conduct fieldwork in remote environments following protocols.
  • Assist in developing competitive research proposals.
  • Assess safety measures, recognize problems, and respond appropriately.
  • Apply safety practices and promote continuous improvement.
Minimum Education and Certifications
  • Master’s degree or higher in remote sensing, geospatial technology, earth science, ecology, or related fields.
Minimum Experience
  • Algorithm development and data processing with SAR for environmental applications.
  • Experience with remote sensing software (ERDAS Imagine, ENVI+IDL, OSGeo platforms) or cloud platforms (Google Earth Engine).
  • Proficiency in Python or similar programming languages (R, MATLAB, C++, Julia, JavaScript).
  • Relevant coursework in math, statistics, remote sensing, earth science, ecology, or environmental engineering.
  • Experience with grant proposal development.
Preferred Experience and Skills
  • Experience with statistical analysis software (SAS, R, MATLAB).
  • Background in SAR physics and mathematics.
  • Management of large geospatial datasets.
  • Knowledge of machine learning techniques.
  • Experience with large datasets and advanced computational systems.
  • Fieldwork experience, including navigation and data collection protocols.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • U.S. Department of Defense security clearance eligibility and U.S. citizenship.
  • Understanding of SAR remote sensing theory.
  • Strong communication skills for presentations and reports.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Teamwork and independent judgment abilities.
Additional Desirable Skills
  • Processing hyperspectral imagery and advanced spectral analysis.
  • GIS software proficiency (ESRI, QGIS, GDAL).
  • Experience working with diverse teams and fostering inclusivity.
Work Environment

Low to moderate noise, typical office environment, minimal physical demands.
