Job summary

HarbisonWalker International (HWI) in West Mifflin, PA, onsite, is seeking a Research Engineer II to conduct laboratory research and analyze samples. The role involves issuing project reviews, evaluating new raw materials, and determining best use of recycled and scrap materials.

Qualifications

• Requires a BS in Engineering or Materials Science.
• Knowledge of development processes, material science/chemistry, forming and firing processes, refractory materials, and refractory applications.
• Must be motivated and inventive.
• Requires three (3) years' experience in development or process engineering including ceramics, materials science, or related research.

Responsibilities

• Conducts laboratory research and analyzes samples.
• Issues project reviews and final reports.
• Evaluates new raw materials and determines best use of recycled and scrap materials.
• Conducts R&D projects and provides plant/process support.
• Plans and implements new or alternate raw material strategies.
• Prepares technical reports and presentations.
• Maximizes data collection benefits; verifies data needs, collects data, and sets up review processes to inform process decisions.
• Optimizes data collection methods to minimize costs and improve data handling.
• Solves manufacturing process issues via experimental evaluations and process/product formula modifications.
• Acts as liaison between plant and research group; supports work trials, troubleshooting, and modeling at the ATRC pilot plant.
