Job summary

Penn State University in University Park seeks a Research Engineer - Intermediate Professional to support additive hybrid manufacturing, including hands-on integration of machine tools with mobile robots and foundry operations.

You will collaborate with project leaders, engineers, and sponsors to develop 3D Sand-Printing, Casting, QC/testing protocols, and document project reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science with 1+ years of relevant experience.
  • Background in metallurgical in carbon and alloy steels, nickel-based alloys and controlled expansion alloys.
  • Demonstrated teamwork but ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on large-scale projects.
  • Demonstrated good oral and written communication.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with project leadership with the development of digital sensors enabled foundry pilot demonstration facility.
  • Collaborate with engineering staff and senior engineering technologists to support design, deployment, testing and validation of additive hybrid technologies.
  • Develop 3D Sand-Printing, Casting, Quality Control, and Testing protocols.
  • Prepare, present and document project reports and presentations, and interface with sponsors and external collaborators.
  • Guide and provide input for technical work activities performed by engineering support staff and/or engineering technologists.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new engineering products and tooling to support project systems.
  • Perform design, development, fabrication, installation, and use of custom electrical, mechanical, and software subsystems.
  • Prepare test plans, procedures, reports, and other formal documentation.
  • Develop specialized electrical, mechanical, and/or software tools to support testing of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Utilize CAD software to develop electrical, mechanical, and/or software products.
  • Collaborate with a broad range of interoffice organizations to accomplish all phases of project development.
  • Conduct tests, provide results, address issues, and recommend modifications related to subsystems.

POSITION SPECIFICS

The Systems for Hybrid - Additive Process Engineering Lab (SHAPE Lab) lead by Dr. Guha Manogharan seeks candidates for the role of Research Engineer - Intermediate Professional.

The mission of the SHAPE Lab is to advance Additive Manufacturing: Design, Material Development and Biomedical Applications; Hybrid Manufacturing; Sand-Printing for Metal Casting.

The Research Engineer supports research and development activities within additive hybrid manufacturing, specifically with hands‑on machine tool integration with mobile robots and foundry operations through the application of known engineering principles and practices in order to develop new concepts, products, equipment, or processes.

  • Collaborate with project leadership with the development of digital sensors enabled foundry pilot demonstration facility.
  • Collaborate with engineering staff and senior engineering technologists in developing, defining, and/or deriving requirements to support the design, deployment, testing and validation of the additive hybrid technologies.
  • Develop 3D Sand-Printing, Casting, Quality Control, and Testing protocols.
  • Prepare, present and document project reports and presentations, and interface with sponsors and external collaborators.
  • Guide and provide input for technical work activities performed by engineering support staff and/or less experienced engineering technologists.
  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new engineering products and tooling to support the development of project systems.
  • Perform design, development, fabrication, installation, and use of custom electrical, mechanical, and software subsystems.
  • Prepare test plans, procedures, reports, and other forms of formal documentation.
  • Develop specialized electrical, mechanical, and/or software tools to support testing of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Utilize computer aided design software to develop electrical, mechanical, and/or software products.
  • Collaborate with a broad range of interoffice organizations to accomplish all phases of project development.
  • Conduct tests, provide results, address issues, and recommend modifications related to electrical, mechanical, or software subsystems.
  • Within specific engineering discipline, maintain an up‑to‑date knowledge of and work towards developing an advanced knowledge of design and analysis tools, test and measurement equipment, languages, and available products and services.
CONTRACT & LOCATION

This position is funded for 1 year(s); continuation past 1 year(s) will be based on university need, performance, and/or availability of funding.

The work location will be fully on-site at University Park.

Approval of remote and hybrid work is not guaranteed regardless of work location.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's Degree - Engineering or Science 1+ years of relevant experience
  • Required Certifications: None
  • Background in Metallurgical in carbon and alloy steels, nickel-based alloys and controlled expansion alloys
  • Demonstrated Team player but able to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to work on large-scale projects
  • Demonstrated good oral and written communication

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $72,300.00 - $108,444.00.
