Job description

The Public Health Institute (PHI) is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting health, well-being, and quality of life for people throughout California, across the nation and around the world. As one of the largest and most comprehensive public health organizations in the nation, we are at the forefront of research and innovations to improve the efficacy of public health statewide, nationally, and internationally.

PHI was distinguished as one of the top 50 “Best Non-Profit Organizations to Work For” by the Non-Profit Times in a national search.

Position Summary

Tracking California is a program of the Public Health Institute, in collaboration with the California Department of Public Health, and our mission is to mobilize data for public health action. We “track” or compile and analyze data about public health and the environment to protect California communities. Our core values include environmental justice and health equity – we work to ensure that all Californians, regardless of location, identity, or income, have the opportunity to live in healthy communities protected from environmental hazards. To achieve this goal, we help community groups, government agencies, researchers, and health advocates shine a spotlight on environmental hazards and other factors that may be impacting community health.

As part of our data team, the Research Associate IV (RAIV) will play a key role in supporting a variety of public health surveillance and research work within Tracking California’s projects. Two core areas include:

  1. Sickle Cell Longitudinal Data Collection (SCDC) Project— The RAIV will be a key team member of the SCDC project responsible for data management, probabilistic data linkage, and contributing to and leading analysis of SCDC data independently and with external researchers. The RAIV will also be a contributor to multi-state data analysis plans and execution, manuscript development, and data visualization.
  2. Environmental health research & surveillance – The RAIV will provide analysis and research support to projects including but not limited to: Community Air Monitoring, Water Quality Data Visualizations, and the Environmental Health Tracking Network.

An ideal candidate would have values that align with our program’s scientific integrity and accessibility, transparency, sustainability, partnership and promoting respect, as well as a passion for social justice. We aim to build an inclusive program team that is reflective of the populations we support and actively seek applications from individuals from communities that are marginalized and underrepresented.

This is a regular full time 100% FTE position. This is a remote California-based position. The incumbent must work from California and be able to travel to the Bay Area periodically as required.

Full salary range for this position: $70,296 to $101,911 per year. The typical hiring range for this position is from $70,296 (minimum) to $86,104 (midpoint), based on 100% FTE. The starting salary is determined based on the candidate’s knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.
