Brown University’s Proteomics Core Facility seeks a Research Associate who will independently manage assigned research projects from design through closeout while supporting mass spectrometry-based proteomics and small molecule analyses for a diverse research community.

The role requires advanced knowledge of protein biochemistry and analytical chemistry, and involves data evaluation, client consultations, and training of undergraduate researchers.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree with 2–5 years' related MS-based proteomics experience.
  • Hands-on MS and LC/MS workflows; data analysis and instrument troubleshooting.
  • Experience guiding projects and communicating results to collaborators.
  • Knowledge of proteins, chemistry, and biochemistry.
  • Experience with small molecule/metabolite LC/MS analysis is strongly desired.
  • Strong computer skills for protein mass spectrometry data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Manage sample preparation and LC-MS/MS acquisition.
  • Conduct quality control and data interpretation of results.
  • Maintain project status and intake documentation in iLabs.
  • Provide client consultations and follow-up meetings.
  • Train undergraduate researchers and provide technical oversight.

Job Description

The Research Associate is a specialized scientific staff memberwithin the Proteomics Core Facility who independently managesassigned research projects from design/project intake throughproject closeout while supporting mass spectrometry -basedproteomics and small molecule/metabolite analyses for a diverseresearch community. The Research Associate independently performsand coordinates sample preparation, LC-MS/MS acquisition, qualitycontrol, evaluates data, manages project status and intakedocumentation in iLabs, conducts client consultations includingproject closeouts/follow-up meetings, and provides technicaloversight and training to undergraduate researchers. Thiscross-disciplinary role is essential to maintaining and expandingthe Core's analytical services which requires advanced knowledge ofprotein biochemistry, analytical chemistry, chromatography, highresolution mass spectrometry, data interpretation, and researchproject management.

This is a fixed term position with a current end date of one yearfrom the date of hire, which may be extended based upon availablefunding.

Job Qualifications
Education and Experience (Grade 9)
  • Required: Master's degree in biology, biochemistry, analyticalchemistry, proteomics, metabolomics, or a closely related fieldplus 2-5 years' related experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with mass spectrometry andLC/MS workflows, including sample preparation, method execution andoptimization, LC-MS data acquisition and analysis, instrumentoperation and troubleshooting, and interpretation of experimentalresults. Experience providing technical support or guidance toresearch projects and communicating analytical results toscientific collaborators is also required.
  • Knowledge of laboratory approaches and techniques in the areasof Proteins, Chemistry, and Biochemistry required.
  • And/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with small molecule or metabolite LC/MS analysis isstrongly desired. Candidate must understand the distinct samplepreparation, chromatographic, and acquisition requirements ofpeptide/protein vs metabolite workflows.
  • Strong computer skills with experience using software for theanalysis of protein mass spectrometry data is stronglyadvantageous, specifically Spectromine, Spectronaut, ProteomeDiscoverer.
  • Experience working with proteins (i.e. Western Blots, BCAs,Purification, performing proteomic sample prep (e.g. ProtifiS-Trap, In-solution digestion, Barocycler assisted-digestion,on-bead digestion, PreOmics etc.) is desirable.
Education and Experience (Grade 10)
  • Required: Master's degree in biology, biochemistry, analyticalchemistry, proteomics, metabolomics, or a closely related fieldplus 5-7 years' related experience.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with mass spectrometry andLC/MS workflows, including sample preparation, method execution andoptimization, LC-MS data acquisition and analysis, instrumentoperation and troubleshooting, and interpretation of experimentalresults.
