Job description

USNH Employees should apply within Workday through the Jobs Hub app.

The Center for Acoustics Research and Education within the Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and Space (EOS) at the University of New Hampshire is seeking candidates for an externally funded, research faculty position. This position will be filled at the rank of Research Assistant Professor or Research Associate Professor depending on the candidate’s qualifications. This position will be fully funded by a current 3‑year project on the topic of acoustical oceanography. The project may be optionally renewed for an additional 2‑year period. Funding for this position beyond this project will be contingent upon the candidate obtaining externally sponsored research funding to support their salary.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally and internationally recognized research program with an emphasis on underwater acoustic propagation. Applicants should have an excellent sustained record of obtaining external research funding, and preferably a strong track record of advising and mentoring graduate students and post‑doctoral scholars. Applicants should have a demonstrated record of scholarship through publications in journals and presentation at conferences and workshops.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Develop, implement, and validate models for acoustic propagation in complex ocean environments over a range of spatial scales and frequencies. 20%
  • Develop computationally efficient approaches for propagation modeling that allow their execution on embedded systems in undersea platforms. 20%
  • Investigate uncertainty in acoustic propagation and approaches to quantify it using in‑situ acoustic observations. 20%
  • Develop strategies for making decisions based on acoustic propagation models in collaboration with researchers from other disciplines. 20%
  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of researchers in academia and industry to advance specific project goals; support the planning and execution of at‑sea experiments, data collection, and data analysis; communicate research results to sponsors and the scientific community through briefings, working groups, meetings, and publications. 20%
