Job description

Position

Postdoctoral Scholar, Department of Engineering, East Carolina University, Wanchese, North Carolina.

Responsibilities

The postdoctoral scholar will independently and collaboratively develop, implement, and analyze scientific research in atmospheric acoustics, focusing on computational and experimental investigations of hyperlocal phenomena in the atmospheric boundary layer. The role includes:

  • Designing and conducting experiments, analyzing data, and writing peer-reviewed manuscripts.
  • Developing new experimental approaches to characterize acoustics at the shore‑water boundary.
  • Managing and overseeing large‑scale field studies measuring concurrent acoustic transmission loss and meteorological parameters, including data processing and data management.
  • Hypothesis development, literature review, and report writing.
  • Supervising undergraduate and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, quality control, and data analysis.
  • Developing independent and collaborative presentations and publications.
  • Demonstrating compliance with biosafety, responsible conduct of research, and human subjects training guidelines.

Approximately 40% of the time will be devoted to computational modeling and generation of scholarly products, and 60% to day‑to‑day management of field studies and student support.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent) in physics, atmospheric science, engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with computational and/or experimental techniques for atmospheric boundary layer measurements, including experimental design, data gathering, and analysis.
  • Proficiency in record keeping and other research‑related skills.
  • English proficiency.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Demonstrated record of research publications.
  • Experience managing complex experimental field study campaigns, including 3‑D Doppler LIDAR wind measurements.
