The Ordovas-Montanes Lab is seeking a motivated Research Assistant II to join the team in the Division of Gastroenterology. The lab specializes in understanding how inflammation drives memory formation in barrier tissues, aiming to develop new therapeutic avenues for human disease. The candidate will contribute to a collaborative project focused on mucosal immunity to respiratory infection and vaccination. They will work under the supervision of Dr. Jose Ordovas-Montanes and be integrated within a community of senior scientists, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. The individual will be mentored to develop independence in experimental design, data analysis, interpretation, and communicating results.

This position provides an opportunity to develop fundamental skills in experimental and computational biological sciences within an interdisciplinary environment, leveraging resources across Boston Children's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. The ideal candidate is interested in understanding infection-induced inflammatory diseases and pursuing further postgraduate education in a related field.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing experimental workflows for human sample processing, including:
    • Single-cell RNA-sequencing
    • Air-liquid interface culture models
    • Bioinformatic analyses in R/Python
  • Following prescribed protocols and schedules
  • Assisting in troubleshooting procedures
  • Ensuring laboratory activities comply with regulations and protocols
  • Sterilizing and cleaning glassware, preparing media and materials

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably with coursework in biology, immunology, chemistry, or genomics, and 2+ years of bench experience (including undergraduate work)
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and work independently within a team
  • Interest in developing and executing new experimental or computational techniques
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and molecular biology
  • Experience with single-cell RNA-sequencing methods and data analysis in R/Python is a plus but not required
