Job summary

UTHealth Houston's Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is hiring a Research Assistant I for the BD2: Breakthrough Discoveries for Thriving with Bipolar Disorder project. The role involves basic to translational research, handling biological samples, laboratory experiments, data collection, and supporting principal investigators.

Minimum education is a Bachelor's Degree with at least 1 year of research experience preferred; willingness to learn phlebotomy is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required or equivalent experience.
  • At least 1 year of research experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with IRB/IEC requirements, GCP documentation, and basic wet lab skills.
  • Must be willing to learn phlebotomy (blood draws).

Responsibilities

  • Perform laboratory experiments and activities to support research objectives.
  • Collect, organize, and prepare data for investigators; update notebooks, records, and databases.
  • Maintain clean laboratory equipment and work areas to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Order laboratory supplies as directed by senior staff.
  • Stay updated on procedures and protocols; participate in ongoing education, seminars, and workshops.
  • Coordinate work of technicians when needed; perform other duties as assigned.

UTHealth Houston's Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is hiring a Research Assistant I for BD2: Breakthrough Discoveries for Thriving with Bipolar Disorder project! BD2 is designed to fill gaps in understanding of bipolar type I disorder, and involves collecting information that may help change or improve the way bipolar disorder is treated in the future.


At least 1 year of experience is preferred. Experience may include conducting research, including familiarity with IRB/IEC requirements, GCP documentation practices, and basic wet lab skills. Candidates must be able to perform or be willing to learn phlebotomy (drawing blood).

Position Summary:

The Research Assistant I, under general supervision, conducts basic/ translational research which may include animal work and other activities according to research protocol. Research activities may include some or all of the following: handling biological samples, laboratory experiments and activities, and data collection.


Position Key Accountabilities:


  • Under general supervision, performs laboratory experiments and activities to support research objectives.

  • Collects, organize and prepares research data to provide needed information to principal investigators and other researchers. Updates notebooks, records, and databases as needed.

  • Maintains clean laboratory equipment and/or work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

  • Orders laboratory and/or other supplies as directed by senior research staff.

  • Stays abreast of new and updated procedures and protocols for the research laboratory. Must maintain compliance with required training. May participate in continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops.

  • As needed, may coordinate the work of technicians to ensure efficient, timely and high-quality results.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

General knowledge of research fields


Minimum Education:

Bachelor's Degree required. May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.

Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds frequently and/or a negligible amount constantly to move objects.
