Job summary

UTHealth Houston is seeking a Research Assistant I in the Research Division for Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery to support basic/translational research. Responsibilities include handling samples, data collection, and coordinating documentation among the clinical team, sponsorship offices, and study monitors.

Under supervision, you will perform lab experiments, maintain records, and help ensure compliance with FDA/IRB requirements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree required; may substitute with equivalent years of experience.

Responsibilities

• Collects and organizes research data for investigators and researchers; maintains notebooks and databases.
• Maintains clean lab equipment and work area; ensures safe and efficient environment.
• Orders laboratory supplies as directed by senior staff.
• Keeps up-to-date with procedures and training; may participate in seminars/workshops.
• Coordinates work of technicians to ensure timely, high-quality results.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The position is with the Research Division for Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery.

The main duties and scope are as assigned by the principal investigator and briefly entail - keeping the study up with the regulatory requirements of FDA and Institutional review board, consenting, data collection, coordinating communication and documentation between sponsored projects office, clinical care team and study sponsors, preparing progress reports for the FDA regulated studies, and preparing documents and database for study monitor visits.

Preferred skills and background would include someone with a clinical background in medicine or nursing or sponsored/industry clinical research.

Position Summary

The Research Assistant I, under general supervision, conducts basic/ translational research which may include animal work and other activities according to research protocol. Research activities may include some or all of the following: handling biological samples, laboratory experiments and activities, and data collection.

Position Key Accountabilities

• Under general supervision, performs laboratory experiments and activities to support research objectives.
• Collects, organize and prepares research data to provide needed information to principal investigators and other researchers. Updates notebooks, records, and databases as needed.
• Maintains clean laboratory equipment and/or work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
• Orders laboratory and/or other supplies as directed by senior research staff.
• Stays abreast of new and updated procedures and protocols for the research laboratory. Must maintain compliance with required training. May participate in continuing education programs, seminars, and workshops.
• As needed, may coordinate the work of technicians to ensure efficient, timely and high-quality results.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education: Bachelor's Degree required May substitute required education with equivalent years of experience beyond the minimum experience requirement.
