Research Assistant - Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences

Wayne State University is seeking an experienced Research Assistant in the Department of Ophthalmology, Visual and Anatomical Sciences at its Detroit campus.

Essential functions (job duties):
  1. Job Purpose: Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator, assist with laboratory, clinical, or population science research. Support in writing research protocols and manuscripts. Design and execute research protocols independently or as trained.
  2. Essential Functions: Conduct scientific techniques in laboratory or clinical research, design experiments, recruit participants, ensure compliance with guidelines, assist with experiments, communicate research progress, collect and analyze data, prepare reports and presentations, maintain laboratory equipment and records, and perform related duties.
  3. Unique duties: Manage mouse colonies, assist with animal experiments, perform routine laboratory tasks (PCR, gel electrophoresis, RNA/protein isolation, Western blot), image retinal tissues, assist with ordering supplies, and maintain research protocols for compliance.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field; advanced knowledge in a scientific discipline preferred.
  • Experience: Entry-level (less than a year), with experience in basic research techniques or human subjects preferred.
  • Skills and Abilities: Ability to work independently, analyze and interpret data, strong organizational skills, excellent communication, and proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Preferred qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in biomedical sciences and laboratory training; knowledge of mouse husbandry is advantageous.
