Job summary

United States Institute of Peace (USIP) in Washington, DC is seeking two Research Assistants for January to June 2025 to support the Governance, Justice and Security team. These roles provide vital support for knowledge tools and policy recommendations toward improved atrocity prevention.

Qualifications

  • A Masters, Ph.D., or law student studying international relations, law, international peace and conflict resolution, sociology, anthropology, research methods, atrocity prevention, or another relevant social science subject.
  • Demonstrated interest in peacebuilding, rule of law, governance reform approaches, and atrocity prevention.
  • Strong research skills and the ability to translate complex themes, ideas, or data into accessible narratives.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and collaborative skills with attention to detail.
  • USIP's Research Assistant program is administered through the Consortium of Universities; eligible for full‑time university students (local or remote).

Responsibilities

  • Provide research support through data collection, literature reviews, outreach, synthesis and analysis related to atrocity prevention and criminal justice reform.
  • Provide communications and writing support to Senior Program Officer and Program Officer, including summaries, write-ups, and notetaking at events.
  • In collaboration with the Program Officer, assist in drafting and editing major USIP publications and blogs.
  • Perform other research and administrative duties to ensure programmatic initiatives are implemented.
