Job summary

The Joan Mitchell Foundation invites applications for a Research Assistant to support ongoing JMCR research on Joan Mitchell's paintings. Based in New York, this full-time, non-exempt role works with the JMCR team to manage archival materials, data entry in FileMaker, image tagging, and outreach to institutions and private collectors.

The position emphasizes accuracy, collaboration, and scholarly research with opportunities to view paintings in person.

Qualifications

  • BA required; MA preferred in Art History with focus on 20th‑century Modernism
  • 1–3 years museum, gallery, archive, or catalogue raisonné research experience
  • Proficiency in FileMaker Pro; Google Suite, Excel, PowerPoint and Photoshop
  • Reading proficiency in French strongly preferred to parse metadata
  • Familiarity with auction house and gallery records
  • Attention to detail and ability to handle data-heavy tasks with discretion
  • Excellent writing, organizational, and communication skills

Responsibilities

  • Data entry and updating artwork records in FileMaker per style guidelines
  • Research using museum libraries, online databases, and archives to verify citations
  • Organize and manage digital image assets and cross-reference information
  • Coordinate outreach to auction houses to encourage submissions and provenance tracking
  • Provide administrative support including correspondence with registrars and curators
  • Collaborate with Legacy Team to share findings and coordinate documentation
