Overview

The Department of Emergency Medicine is looking to bring on a Research Assistant 2 to support recruitment and implementation of an NIH-funded clinical research study conducted in the Emergency Department. The Research Assistant 2 will participate in designated recruitment periods, including weekend coverage, until the study enrollment goal is reached. Responsibilities include notifying Emergency Department clinicians of study activities; identifying potentially eligible participants through the electronic tracking board and collaboration with ED clinicians; approaching patients and introducing the study; assessing current alcohol and cannabis use; screening participants for eligibility using standardized instruments (AUDIT-C and CUDIT-R); obtaining informed consent; administering baseline and post-intervention research assessments; delivering the study Brief Negotiated Intervention (BNI); conducting 30-day follow-up assessments; entering and maintaining study data in REDCap; maintaining accurate research documentation; coordinating participant follow-up and electronic incentive distribution; and participating in weekly research meetings. The Research Assistant 2 will work under the supervision of the Lead Research Associate and Principal Investigator and will be responsible for conducting study activities in accordance with study protocols, Good Clinical Practice, and applicable human subjects research regulations.

Job Duties

Recruit, screen, and enroll eligible Emergency Department (ED) participants according to study protocol. Obtain informed consent and administer standardized research questionnaire and study assessments. Deliver the study Brief Negotiated Intervention (BNI) following the approved intervention protocol. Assist with data organization, coding, and quality review as directed. Conduct 30-day follow-up assessments and maintain participant retention (clinical research data collection and follow-up procedures). Coordinate participant follow-up and distribute electronic participant incentives. Participate in weekly research meetings and collaborate with the Lead Research Associate and Principal Investigator. Work under the Lead RA for coordination and execution (team-based research coordination and support within structured protocols). This position REQUIRES: occasional afterhours work as late as 12am midnight.

Required Skills And Abilities

• Demonstrated experience obtaining informed consent. Demonstrated experience with participant recruitment. Proven ability to work with research protocols and clinical trials; adept at collecting and managing data.
• Strong interpersonal skills, excellent written and verbal communication abilities, and experience working with diverse groups or patient populations.
• Intermediate to advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word), electronic medical databases, and other relevant software.
• Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
• Strong customer service orientation, with the ability to handle sensitive information confidentially and professionally.

Preferred Skills And Abilities

• Bachelor's degree in a related field such as psychology, neuroscience, or public health; experience administering structured clinical interviews or managing research studies.
• Familiarity with research regulations, ethical guidelines, and Institutional Review Board (IRB) procedures.
• Proven experience with data management software, such as REDCap, OnCore, and clinical trial management systems (CTMS).
• Prior experience in a clinical setting, working with subjects with psychiatric or cognitive disorders.
• Completion of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training, with certification as a Clinical Research Associate (CRA) or Clinical Research Professional (CRP) preferred.
