Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Ensure recruitment, enrollment, and follow-up activities comply with study protocols and regulatory guidelines.
  • Collect biological specimens and coordinate their transport, processing, storage, and documentation in REDCap.
  • Collaborate with the study coordinator to hand off specimens and enter data into REDCap.
  • Provide updates on recruitment, enrollment, specimens, and study progress to investigators and teams.
  • Maintain adherence to IRB, HIPAA, and Good Clinical Practice requirements.

Overview

The Research Assistant is responsible for recruiting and consenting patients for participation in the Tissue Core research study. Additionally, this role is responsible for collecting, processing, and tracking biospecimens obtained from three primary clinical sites: Yale New Haven Hospital (York Street Campus), Yale New Haven Hospital (Saint Raphael Campus), and North Haven Digestive Diseases Center. The position supports all aspects of specimen and data collection activities to ensure compliance with study protocols, regulatory requirements, and institutional policies. This position will be required to travel between sites.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Identify, screen, recruit, and consent eligible patients for participation in Tissue Core and related research studies, using EPIC and endoscopy schedules, under supervision of the Co-Director of the Tissue Core.
  • Ensure subject recruitment, enrollment, specimen collection, and follow-up activities are completed according to study protocols and regulatory guidelines.
  • Collect biological specimens (including blood and tissue) from participating clinical sites and coordinate their transport, processing, storage, and documentation in REDCap and other databases as required.
  • Work closely with the study research coordinator to hand off Yale specimens and facilitate entering data into REDCap.
  • Provide regular updates regarding recruitment, enrollment, specimen collection, and study progress to principal investigators, research teams, and collaborators.
  • Ensure adherence to Institutional Review Board (IRB), HIPAA, and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) requirements.
Required Skills and Abilities

1. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

2. Ability to work independently in clinical environments and interact professionally with patients, physicians, and research staff.

3. Expertise in use of Microsoft Excel and Word.

4. Must hold a valid Connecticut driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.

Principal Responsibilities

1. Researches and collects data through complex laboratory/ scientific experiments, techniques, and procedures; library research; structured interviews; or through other means for designated research assignments. 2. Records and compiles information related to research data. Codes data accordingly to research specifications. Uses a computer terminal to input and retrieve data and to generate reports. Processes and summarizes data using scientific or statistical techniques. 3. Assists in data interpretation and analyses. Reports on status of research activities. Sets up, operates and maintains laboratory equipment and apparatus. 4. Formulates and prepares scientific solutions and media. Recruits study participants. Orders and maintains inventory of supplies. 5. May assist in designing, developing, and modifying research experiments, procedures, or survey instruments. May oversee and instruct research staff. 6. Performs additional functions incidental to research activities.

Required Education and Experience

Six years of related work experience, four of them in the same job family at the next lower level, and high school level education; or four years of related work experience and an Associate's degree; or little or no work experience and a Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
