Job description

Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking a Research Analyst for our Renewables and Other Power Program.

This new position will lead the development of global data coverage for small-scale solar installations under 1 Megawatt (MW). This role involves designing and implementing geospatial methodologies and data strategies to identify, estimate, and verify the national and sub-national distribution of these installations. The Research Analyst will also maintain and refine Python code to harmonize government and structured datasets, enabling integration across solar project size categories—from installations under 1 MW to those exceeding 20 MW. This position will also play a key function in streamlining research workflows by identifying and resolving duplicate data entries within the Global Solar Power Tracker, and supporting the development of best practices and automation approaches that can be applied across GEM’s broader suite of energy trackers.

The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge,
Global Energy Monitor
is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

About Global Energy Monitor

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a network of researchers developing information for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, GEM’s research has become an essential tool for activists, journalists, policymakers, and scientists. GEM’s data and reports are used and cited by organizations ranging from Greenpeace to The Wall Street Journal. GEM’s information is used by Bloomberg Terminals, the International Energy Agency, the IPCC, Climate Analytics, Carbon Tracker Initiative, and hundreds of others.

Location

Preference will be given to those living in the United States, however, GEM may be able to hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the
U.S. Department of State’s
website. GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Using and developing spreadsheets, databases, and other software tools to organize tracker data sets and analyze renewable power sources at the regional, national, and international levels.
  • Analyzing and staying abreast of industry, NGO, media, and governmental data and reports to assess current and emerging trends, support project ideation, and assist in new project scoping.
  • Using various global data sources (government websites, company reports, news articles, etc., as well as information from partner organizations) to ensure the tracker represents the most accurate and timely information for each facility.
  • Collaborating with department supervisors, project managers, researchers, and analysts to ensure data consistency and energy-sector wide analyses.
  • Developing strong relationships and outreach to partners in NGOs, governments, business organizations, and academia.
  • Assisting third-party researchers in academia, NGOs, governments, and business organizations seeking to use GEM data and analysis.
  • Providing support for other Global Energy Monitor projects, including administrative tasks, as needed.
  • Using software and computers, such as word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and operating systems.

Required Qualifications

Applicants who tailor their resume and cover letter to these requirements and the position description above will be prioritized. Applications at GEM are carefully reviewed by our team. We take the time to consider each candidate individually.

  • Professional writing skills.
  • Possession of fundamental computer programming and spatial mapping skills.
  • Experience coordinating people, projects, and resources; ability to work with others effectively.
