Our Specialty Products Underwriting Manager is responsible for ensuring all specialty products loans are underwritten in accordance with Company and Investor guidelines, following company policies and procedures. Serves as a subject matter expert in non-qualified specialty products underwriting for wholesale and correspondent channels. Makes sound underwriting decisions and ensures all decisions meet legal and policy requirements. Performs duties in accordance with company policies, procedures, and all applicable regulations. The target pay range for this position is $140,000 - $170,000 per year, plus a quarterly bonus.

What You’ll Do
  1. Manage a team of specialized product underwriters (non-agency/purchase products) across wholesale and correspondent channels.
  2. Perform management responsibilities including hiring, training, performance monitoring, rewarding, disciplining, and addressing staff issues.
  3. Mentor and train underwriters to ensure high performance.
  4. Monitor quality of work, technical abilities, and risk analysis of underwriters.
  5. Provide technical and guideline training, recommend improvements, and conduct ongoing training.
  6. Establish operational controls to maintain and improve quality and service standards.
  7. Define and monitor productivity standards and performance goals, ensuring they are met regularly.
  8. Oversee pipeline activities to ensure timelines, customer follow-up, and quality control scores meet guidelines.
  9. Analyze LOS production reports and update senior management on turnaround times.
  10. Review files for quality and provide second signatures when necessary.
  11. Assist in developing underwriting guidelines and training materials, staying informed of industry changes.
  12. Work with senior management to establish department goals and objectives.
  13. Develop processes to improve team and department performance, cost efficiency, and customer service.
  14. Respond to audits, reviews, and quality control reports, establishing corrective actions as needed.
  15. Recruit and interview for open underwriting positions.
  16. Assign files to balance workload.
  17. Perform underwriting duties during peak times or staff shortages.
  18. Perform other duties as assigned.
What You’ll Need
  • Expert knowledge of specialty products underwriting and familiarity with FNMA, FHLMC, and Government guidelines.
  • Ability to understand and negotiate complex issues, integrating different viewpoints.
  • Decision-making skills impacting department credibility, operations, and service.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work schedules.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, adaptable to various management levels.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in PC skills including Excel and Word.
  • Ability to maintain high performance levels and collaborate on complex problems.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Experience in a paperless environment preferred.
