REMOTE Systems Safety Engineer

Description: A REMOTE System Safety Engineer job working is currently available at Belcan. This position administratively reports to our Indianapolis, Indiana office. System Safety Engineers are highly proficient in systems safety methodologies and tools that are commonly utilized in the approving flight critical systems in the airborne platform and/or space systems markets.
The candidate must have relevant Systems engineering skills (including problem solving), the ability to collaborate across multi-discipline and/or multiple product/IPT teams to properly assess, influence and demonstrate compliance to applicable regulatory requirements, primarily projects requiring civil certification approval(s). This includes design implementation support to demonstrate adoption and implementation of safety critical industry requirements as well as compliance to relevant safety and reliability related guidance such as compliance to SAE ARP-4754A, SAE ARP-4761, MIL-STD-882 or similar regulatory guidance.
Systems And Safety Engineer Job Duties
- Apply system safety assessment techniques in the design of safety-critical products, including identification of safety related requirements and development of all safety related products/deliverables including the SSA, FHA, FMECA, and Fault Tree analysis
- Perform review of 3rd party analyses, including reviewing systems safety related requirements, safety-critical systems, change requests, and peer reviews.
- Perform requirements decomposition, author RMSS program requirements, perform design reviews and assessments, identification of safety related requirements, conduct tracing of certification and systems safety related requirements.
- Maintain and execute the program safety and essential function plans.
- Write, review, and approve safety artifacts in accordance with SAE ARP-4754A, SAE ARP-4761 or MIL-STD-882 including Fault Tree Analyses (FTA), Functional Hazard Analyses (FHA), Preliminary System Safety Assessments (PSSA) and System Safety Assessments (SSA).
- Derive and manage safety requirements
- Develop hazard reports, including controls and needed verification of controls
- Influence designs to improve the safety performance, resolve safety related issues, avoid redesigns later in the lifecycle and offer perspective on how to improve system designs
- As required, execute reliability, availability, and maintainability assessments.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering or a related field and more than 5 years relevant experience in Systems Safety / Analysis while supporting systems that require civil certification regulatory approval (example: FAA or EASA certifications)
- Recent systems safety experience in developing flight critical Avionics and/or IMA in the civil regulatory / certification markets - specifically FAA and/or EASA
- Recent experience with developing fault trees and using numerical probability analysis methods applied to safety analysis, including translation to probability requirements
- Proficiency with systems safety and systems engineering tools (e.g., CAFTA, DOORS, JAMA, Windchill, CAMEO, JIRA, etc.)
- Ability to effectively interact and build trust with team members from many different backgrounds, including engineering management, engineering teams, program management.
- Root cause analysis (RCA) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) methods
- Effects Criticality Analysis (FMECA) practices, and corrective action development
- Familiar with industry standards for hardware and software certification, including but not limited to Type Certification, RTCA DO-178, RTCA DO-254, SAE ARP-4754A, and SAE ARP4761 standard practices.
- Working knowledge of SAE ARP-4761 or similar (aka ISO 26262 or MIL standards)
- Familiarity with DoD Airworthiness Certification Criteria.
- Due to the nature of the work performed, U.S. Citizenship is required.
Desired Skills
- 5+ years of system safety and RAMS engineering experience.
- Recent systems safety experience with Gas Turbines related systems.
- Experience or knowledge of hazard assessment processes would be an advantage, including design basis assessment techniques (production of fault schedules, the derivation of safety functional requirements) and As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP) assessments.
- Experience in supporting Boeing civil certifications and/or Airbus certifications in a systems or systems safety related role for flight critical systems is highly preferred
- Influence designs to improve the safety performance, resolve safety related issues, avoid redesigns later in the lifecycle and offer perspective on how to improve system designs
- Knowledge of electrical systems, including Generators, Distribution Networks, Motors, Converters, High Energy Directed Lasers, and Energy Storage Systems.
We provide a competitive pay and benefits package. This position is offering a salary range of $85,000 to $120,000. Belcan considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to education, experience, geographic location, and discipline.
