Job summary

ThinkingAhead Executive Search is partnering with a Professional Engineering and Project Services firm in the United States for a Civil/Structural Engineering Manager role focused on substation design. The position combines leadership of a civil/structural team with hands-on design across foundations, steel, and site development, while coordinating with electrical teams.

The ideal candidate has ABET-accredited Civil Engineering degree and 15+ years in utilities or heavy industrial environments,

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (ABET accredited).
• 15+ years of relevant experience in utilities, power generation, or industrial environments.
• Strong experience in civil/structural design for substations or heavy industrial projects.
• Knowledge of structural steel, concrete, masonry, and foundation design.
• Understanding of surveying techniques (LiDAR, photogrammetry, GPS).
• Familiarity with codes, standards, and construction practices.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Manage personnel in the civil/structural engineering group
• Lead planning, design, and execution of substation projects
• Develop civil/structural designs including site development, foundations, and structural steel
• Prepare plans, sections, details, and bills of material
• Perform engineering calculations and develop technical specifications
• Coordinate with electrical, civil, and structural teams, and project managers
• Conduct design reviews and perform quality checks on team deliverables
• Support project schedules, budgets, and overall execution
• Perform site visits, walkdowns, and construction support activities
