Job summary

Washington State Supreme Court in Olympia seeks a Staff Attorney to conduct sophisticated legal research, analyze appellate matters, and prepare high-quality memoranda for Justices. Qualifications

• Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law.
• Member in good standing in the Washington State Bar Association (attorneys licensed in other states considered).
• Four (4) years of attorney appellate experience or equivalent.
• Excellent legal research and writing skills.
• Ability to learn and help implement new technology.
• Willingness to work remotely as required by the office.
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and deliver high-quality results.
• Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including ending systemic racism per the Supreme Court’s public letter (June 4, 2020).

Responsibilities

• Provides the Justices with legal memoranda recommending action on petitions for review and motions.
• Prepares draft opinions and orders for the Court and draft rulings for the Commissioner.
• Summaries of proposed opinions for internal circulation.
• Issue statements for cases to be heard by the Court posted on the Court’s website.
• Assists in recommendations for changes to court rules and procedures.
• Serves as a resource for law clerks and externs; mentors law students.
• Assists in development and presentation of continuing legal education.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
