Description: A REMOTE Senior System Safety Engineer position is currently available at Belcan. This role reports administratively to our Indianapolis, Indiana office. System Safety Engineers are highly proficient in systems safety methodologies and tools used in approving flight-critical systems in airborne and space systems markets.

The candidate must have relevant systems engineering skills, including problem solving, and the ability to collaborate across multi-discipline and/or multiple product/IPT teams to assess, influence, and demonstrate compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, primarily for projects requiring civil certification approval(s). This includes supporting design implementation to demonstrate adoption and implementation of safety-critical industry requirements and ensuring compliance with relevant safety and reliability guidance such as SAE ARP-4754A, SAE ARP-4761, MIL-STD-882, or similar standards.

Systems and Safety Engineer Job Duties

• Apply system safety assessment techniques in designing safety-critical products, including identifying safety requirements and developing safety-related artifacts like SSA, FHA, FMECA, and Fault Tree analyses.
• Review third-party analyses, safety-related requirements, safety-critical systems, change requests, and conduct peer reviews.
• Perform requirements decomposition, author RMSS program requirements, conduct design reviews and assessments, and trace certification and safety requirements.
• Maintain and execute program safety and essential function plans.
• Write, review, and approve safety artifacts per SAE ARP-4754A, SAE ARP-4761, or MIL-STD-882, including FTA, FHA, PSSA, and SSA.
• Derive and manage safety requirements.
• Develop hazard reports, including controls and verification measures.
• Influence design improvements to enhance safety, resolve safety issues, and prevent redesigns later in the lifecycle.
• Execute reliability, availability, and maintainability assessments as needed.

Required Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical Engineering, or related field, with over 10 years of relevant experience in Systems Safety/Analysis supporting systems requiring civil certification (e.g., FAA, EASA).
• Recent experience in developing flight-critical avionics or IMA systems for civil certification markets, specifically FAA or EASA.
• Experience with fault tree development and numerical probability analysis methods for safety analysis.
• Proficiency with safety and systems engineering tools (e.g., CAFTA, DOORS, JAMA, Windchill, CAMEO, JIRA).
• Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams, including management and engineering teams.
• Experience with root cause analysis, FMEA, FMECA, and effects criticality analysis.
• Familiarity with hardware/software certification standards (e.g., RTCA DO-178, DO-254, SAE ARP-4754A, ARP4761).
• Knowledge of SAE ARP-4761, ISO 26262, or MIL standards.
• Understanding of DoD Airworthiness Certification Criteria.
• U.S. Citizenship is required due to the nature of the work.

Desired Skills

• Over 10 years of system safety and RAMS engineering experience.
• Recent experience with gas turbine systems.
• Knowledge of hazard assessment and ALARP assessments.
• Experience supporting Boeing or Airbus civil certifications for flight-critical systems.
• Knowledge of electrical systems, including generators, distribution networks, motors, converters, directed lasers, and energy storage systems.
